week 6

I had my first midterm this past week. It went alright. And that is all I think I can say.. It is an honor code violation to talk about it I guess..I have no idea what the limitations on it are but I am not going to risk getting thrown out of law school or a mark on my permanent record for it. Apparently if you have honor code violations you might not be allowed to take the bar. They see it as a indication of future indiscretions and that is not a good thing for a lawyer. Also I found out that speeding will never keep me from taking the bar but drunk driving would. It all depends on how irresponsible you are.

The rest of the week was kind of a fog. I still managed to get everything I needed to done except for some Civ Pro reading I didn't know I had to do. My professor gave us a syllabus with no dates on it so no one knows when we are supposed to be doing the readings and until now she has always told us what we are supposed to have completed for the next class. I am responsible enough to read what I am assigned but when I have no way of knowing what is assigned then I have no idea what to read. Most people were broadsided in class after she started talking about the reading and started using the Socratic method to get people to talk about the different aspects of the case that we hadn't not read but were expected to read...

Besides that awful class, I did have a really good experience with the writing specialist. I met with her for a half hour and finally realized how to write a memo. I learned more from her in those 30 minutes than I had from my professor or the assigned reading from the past 6 weeks. That kind of bugged me because I spent 160 bucks a week to be in that class and I only spent 30 minutes with someone outside of class and finally realized what I was supposed to have known already...But know that I know what I am supposed to, I have high hopes for my next memo grade.

I had my cheese stolen this week. I bought cheese that was already sliced (a bad move on my part because its more expensive then just a block of cheese) and when I went to look for it this week for a sandwich I could not find it anywhere! I searched my whole fridge and I even looked in the garbage to see if I had accidentally thrown it away. I even looked under the fridge in case I dropped it. I still can't find it and now it is making me paranoid that I have a cheese stealing neighbor...Weird part is that my shredded cheese and the american cheese was still there...So maybe they only liked good sliced cheese...I hope I locate it soon so I don't feel like I am losing my mind.

It is crazy that I have already been here for 7 weeks. (I got here a week before school started) It is going by really fast. I have to start finding job opportunities now. I would really like to be in Wisconsin for most of the summer but there is the issue with all of my stuff being in NH so maybe I will have to spend part of the time at home and the other part in NH...Or I can go visit NH every so often to check in. I don't know what I am going to do yet...
We are not allowed to talk to career services until November 1st because of an aba rule. No first year student can have help from the career service dept. until 11/1. The only saving grace is that legal employers know this and do not have deadlines until after first semester. I am crossing my fingers that I can have some type of legal job this summer. It would be nice to have a paid internship but it might not be plausible so I would probably deal with working in a smaller law firm getting my feet wet for no pay. I really really really would like to work in a large firm though. Who knows...I will find out what opportunities I have in Wisconsin and go from there...

I felt like I was a real New Englander today! I said Concord correctly!!! And I didn't say it twice like I had been. I would say it in Wisconsinspeak and then again as a true New Englander every time I said it. When I come home for Christmas I will probably be cringing when I hear Concord pronounced wrong like they do here when I used to say it. So practice saying Conquered instead of Con-cord. I was actually told that mispronouncing Concord is like saying Cincinnati wrong. I wanted to disagree because Cincinnati sounds exactly like you would think it sounds...but hey I could be way off...Remind me never to say Cincinnati to someone from there...
But New Hampshirians pronounce everything weird...Like Portsmouth or Dartmouth. You say Portsmith or Dartmith...the ou=i. Well I guess that isnt the best example because there is a Plymouth in Wisconsin and we say mith....Maybe that town was founded by someone from NH?

My next midterm is Legal Research. It was a take home exam and we basically just have to research a topic and show that we know how to use the library and the internet. The class is not very difficult but it is like torture because the class meets for two hours every Thursday morning at 8am. I am not a morning person. Maybe after three years of this that will change.
